How many times have you heard yourself say “I just don’t feel motivated today”. Chances are, if you are like everyone else, you’ve probably said those words more times than you care to remember and there is absolutely no shame in that because it means you are normal. The truth of the matter is you can’t achieve your goals without action and it seems almost impossible to take action without that magical motivation.
Motivation Comes from within
If you ask a dozen different people where they get their motivation from you will most likely get a range of different answers. Some will say they get their motivation from their friends. For others, it may be their children. Some may even say that they get their motivation from their heroes.
When Arnold Schwarzenegger began body building seriously in his teens, he would find motivation from the many different world champion bodybuilders who proceeded him. He used to line his bedroom walls with posters of his favorite bodybuilders just so he would stay motivated all the time.
The reality is no matter what source you give credit to, you are the one who has to feel motivated
It is an internal force that comes from YOU.
Sure, you may say that your children motivate you to work harder for your next job promotion or that it was the story of how Microsoft started which spurred you into action and got you motivated to start your own business. At the end of the day, you are the one who creates that sense of motivation within. You are the one who is responsible for finding a source of motivation. You are the one who has to take action and if motivation is your fuel for action then you need to accept that motivation is created from within.
How to Stay Motivated?
The problem with using motivation isn’t getting motivated. Anyone who has ever made a new year’s resolution list knows the feeling of being motivated. You want to jump up and down. You want to run to the gym to sign up. You want to rent out that office space and start building your product. Anyone can feel the adrenaline rush of being motivated.
The thing that separates those that succeed and those that don’t is CONSISTENCY.
Sure you may be motivated at the start of a new year but can you stay motivated day in and day out for a long period of time? Will you go to the gym every day or will your motivation fizzle out? Motivation is useful but only to the extent that it is practiced so consistently that it becomes a habit.
The first thing you have to do if you want to use motivation successfully is to understand that motivation is not merely a feeling. Motivation is a skill and just like any other skill, it is something that can be learned.
Write out your Perfect Day.
A good motivational tool is to visualize your perfect day by writing it out. Be as vivid and as detailed as possible. Talk about where you want to live, who you want to wake up next to and what kind of work you want to do.
After you write down your perfect day, put it somewhere safe and read it EVERY DAY. If writing out your perfect day seems strange to you then at the very least write out the answer to the question “Why am I doing this?” When you do either of these, you will have something to go back to on a daily basis and you will be reminded of the source of your motivation.
This may seem silly at first but after days, weeks and maybe even months, you’ll be surprised at how little you even need motivation anymore because you will have become a motivated person.
